Blog #2

Let's keep the conversation going from last night's discussion of the Greenfield article! I'd like to see some new insights that are fully developed and explored. Keep returning to the blog to respond to one another.

  1. I agree with the majority of the information cited in the article, however, technology is not the only thing that has helped shape that particular generation. I would argue that music and ethnicity are fundamental in developing a sense of collective identity etc, and that more thought should go into a label for an entire generation.

  2. Is it possible being one of the Generation Techs your view is skewed? True, music and other mindnumbing things are part of GT's development, that just happened to be the topic at the time,so that is the main focus. Here is another question on that note, why would you (not you per se) but youth in general allow music to take control of your thoughts and process of growing up? The news periodically states that music and video games influence some youth do things they normally wouldn't do, i just don't understand how lyrics, or an image on a screen influences one to act out? but i also don't understand how Crackheads allow the drug to control them either, just a thought.

  3. I see some validity in the previous points made...but didn't music and "ethnicity" (I'm not too sure how ethnicity is being used so clarification is appreciated) shape every generation? To say music and ethnicity should go into the thought process for labeling a generation is too broad. I think maybe a specific genre coupled with a specific ethnicity may help me better understand.

Isn't technology a reasonable label for this generation. It is something that distinguishes this generation from all the other generations. That's the purpose of a label...something that will signify "different."

However, I do believe that the label can have some adverse affects on the youth. They could possibly use it as a crutch and not be open to doing things the "old-fashioned" way. I think that this generation should recognize the label as just that, a label, and not fully become technological.

  4. Technology in the classroom is an excellent means of connecting students with other students around the world. Afterall, they are being educated to function in a global society. It promotes a more advanced level of thinking and problem solving. This generation entered the classroom technologically literate. Technology is not foreign to them, it is a way of life. Their exposure to an assortment of technologies at home has already impacted how they think, learn, and interact.
With all due rspect, I realize that we must have an awareness of attaching labels to groups in society. However, I think it's quite complimentary as technology is much more than entertainment. This generation was born into a world of technologies that was simply a vision when I was their age (laptop computers, internet, social networks, wireless connections). It's totally amazing and the way this generation embraces it, is nothing short of miraculous.

  5. This is sort of off base but in the same category, the frequncey of technology changing day to day. The video games aren't capadable with each other so you have to buy something different everytime they improve them. As technology changes so goes the cost of them or to keep up with them. Also children can fix, figure out these games, phones, etc, but the basics of school they don't grasp, doesn't anyone see that as a problem? They can remember lyrics of a song, but can't remember their multilplications. One of the kids i work with they(shoolteachers) pacify her by letting her "get on the computer" she can't read, do math, can barely write, but she knows what websites to go to for #$%@ that has no relevance in her "independant living skills"she could figure things out on my phone, that i still have problems with, so there is something in there to help her learn, how do i or others reach in to get it out with/out technology?

  6. Hey Green, I agree w/you. Today's youth were born in a technological age, much unlike we "baby-boomers". We we not exposed to PCs and Ipods. My grandchildren have fun w/this fact.:) The label "Generation Tech." is not meant negatively , but implies that our youth were simply born during a technologically advanced era.

  8. I agree with everyone in one way or another. My only concern with the Generation Tech is that there are a lot of negative outcomes to the generation in itself. One being that it is handicapping children to not always think for their selves. As doctor Greenfield stated many times before, he sometimes get papers that has shorthanded words because students are so use to abbreviating that it has become unconscious for them. Second is that people are becoming lazy and unhealthy because it's so much technology, with more to arise, that kids often go outside any more due to texting, playing video games, skypeing, etc. SO they are not getting all the exercise they should be getting. This is becoming a mental problem but and physical concern as well. One last thing I wanted to bring out was the change in the communication process, as one of our other peers stated in our class discussion about reaching her daughter threw the texting. It's becoming ridiculous with how people rarely talk face to face anymore. What happened to that?

  9. Greene and Watson, can you guess what "smh" Rotf" "Lmao" or "ttyl" means???? there are a few more i am learning. Glo dease, i have gotten use to it, we can talk without shouting and she feels more comfortable texting and even IMing,at least there is the communication. I think i have the most problem finding things out on Facebook, i only got on to find out what she is up to in college and sometimes i wish i didn't know.On the other hand friends and family have become closer because the email, txting and im ing is instant as oppose to a letter. It has its ups and downs.

  10. Yes, Crystal, I'm familiar with these initials (abbreviations). Smh = shaking my head; roth = rolling on the floor; lmao = laughing my a** off; and ttyl = talk to you later. I'm familiar with a few others as well. Writing and speaking using codes isn't a new thing. I believe every generation has done this to some degree. Mine certainly did. I vividly recall sitting in Sabbath school passing coded messages and thinking that if they were confiscated I would be able to wiggle my way out of its true meaning.

  11. See Green your better than me, because i had no clue, and when i asked the youngins they laughed at me. I don't recall coded messages growing up.

  12. Crystal, I don't know this language, (should I?) I feel that today's youth is just use to everything being "quick, fast & in a hurry", now they can't take the time to write correctly :(

  13. As for Monday's assignment, why was this important for this class?? I personnally believe in the teachings of the Christain Church, that homosexuality is a sin., Hear what I said, this is My belief and I am entitled that, as you are to yours. If that is who you are, "more power to you". That is between you and YOUR maker. If one of my children or grandchildren told that they were gay or lesbian, yes. I would have a real difficult time w/that. But, I would continue to love them, because they are family, and family is the most important thing!

  14. Ida you know there is relevance in almost everything.
I have seen videos before. I believe it is a persons personal business as to whom they sleep with. Society is too involved in other peoples lives. If it doesn't affect my life why should it matter? I agree that people have selective reading, thinking, and memory. Some choose to see what fits in their lives. It isn't their life so why does it matter? I believe the last time this topic came up,one of the issues was explaining to someone's child why two men are together,or two women, well i think that is part of the birds and bees conversation if one so chooses. As a parent of a lesbian,it was hard for me to cope with this issue, because i was worried about what people would think of ME, it "aint" about me. I explained to my child that her relationship was going to be more difficult because of others opinions, and she had to be strong enough to handle everything that comes with her relationship. I commend her and the youth of today that are open and honest with their feelings, because they have the courage many don't. It takes a strong person to say " I am different". It takes a stronger person to accept ones differences. She as well as other homosexuals are not their sexual preference, they are beings, that have feelings, emotions, dreams and goals, so why should we judge what they do behind closed doors?
I have an issue with Jimmy boy condemning a gay man,but he was crying his eyes out because "he had sinned" are we suppose to forgive him and not the homosexual couple? Often times people forget the Bible was written by a "MAN" not GOD himself, it is a thought, translation and hope of what some think was going on at that time. Who is to say the Bible is the truth? I believe in God and all of the above but, we were given free will to live our lives in his image,we have FAILED thus far. The hardest thing to do is RIGHT, so no one is exempt from fault. I think the cartoon was hilarious saying that a person who has older brothers is going to turn out gay, well what are the stats on that? Again Ida there is relevance in the conversation just wait and see, you have to have an open mind and see in, out, upside and around the box.

  15. Crystal, my mind is open, but I still have my personal beliefs. That dose not say that I am prejudice towards homosexuals, not at all, to each his/her own. It rather affirms that that lifestyle is not for me, based on My personal beliefs.

  16. I enjoyed this video. I didnt know that people felt so strongly about this issue. Personally I don't care if someone is gay. I'm a Christian and we are taught not to judge. Although, some people in my religion would consider this a sin. When a person is put in a postiion to accept their loved ones lifestyle it is hard when it is going against their own beliefs. So I can understand both ways of looking at this issue.

  17. This video was very interesting and I didnt realize how this issue has taking over lives of some people. I personally feel like I am no one to judge others about what they are doing. I feel like what people do in there personal lives shouldnt be such a big deal to society.

  18. WOW! Tonight's class was GREAT!! The questions posed by Douglas were great, they really presented an opportunity to examine the "male identity" and the pressure that our society places on males to be "men". I feel better now about my own presentation, as how to phase the questions.

  19. @ Crystal, my view is very much so skewed lol, however, I also use my sociological imagination. my theory, wen it comes 2 the youth and the way that they are socialized is that a dual culture exists that is intertwined within the generation. When It comes to institutions of socialization its all about how individuals respond to the environment. Environment meaning music, video games, etc if one is realistic den dat individual takes things at face value, = a practical person, surrounded by practical people, for instance, if my mom want buy me a cd, den I will steal it. Logical, predetermined that as a need vs. that optimistic sumone or groups faced with the same situation would respond with, maybe I need to get a job to obtain what I want. Maybe I could ask my aunt. the Realistic vs. the optimistic, I contend that both responses were correct or logical. Further more, as a sagacious para-socialologist when we look at music and how it affects the youth, I wood argue that anything expressed in the music must already exists b4 it is created. Wen NWA said fux da police, it was because the dirty cop phenomenon was getting out of hand, that’s how they felt because that’s what they saw. Not… that’s what they said, and it came 2 past. No it already existed. If anything music serves as a informal institution of socialization. The youth, listen to the music that subliminally influence attitudes and behaviors that help create a realistic or optimistic
    person/people ..jus my thought ..glah
