Welcome to the Blog -- Topic 1

Welcome to the course blog! I am truly excited about teaching this course, and I hope that you find it to be an enlightening and enjoyable educational experience. This blog serves as a mechanism for everyone to process ideas and concepts related to our class and to learn through engagement with others. Since none of us is as smart as all of us, we can gain further insights by taking in the ideas of our community members. While we may disagree on here, it is essential that we always demonstrate respect and maintain an open mind.

In order to participate, click on the heading "Welcome to the Blog -- Topic 1" above. (For subsquent weeks, you just click on the new title.) If you scroll down, you can read my instructions and enter your comments in the box. Come back a little while later, click on the same link, and read the posts from your classmates. USE YOUR REAL NAME EITHER IN YOUR "SCREEN NAME" OR IN YOUR POSTS; OTHERWISE, I WILL NOT KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND CANNOT ASSIGN POINTS. It would also be great if everyone could at least publish their photo in the "Followers" section on the right-hand side of the page. That way, we can learn each other's names and connect faces with ideas.I will post a blog topic almost every week during the term.

For each topic, I would like for you to produce a 1-2 paragraph thoughtful comment that shows your honest reflections and includes some type of contribution to our understanding of the issues at hand. Then, after reading the posts of your classmates, I'd like for you to jump back into the conversation -- either by critically responding to someone else or by adding to your previous post with further insights. Feel free to continue the dialogue if you wish.

You will be graded on the value-added nature of your overall posts over the course of the term. In other words, just typing anything does not earn you credit -- your comments must offer something useful for us to consider. For each blog, you earn one point for a good post and one more point for a good response to others. I will add those points each week onto Blackboard (if it's a weak post, you will not earn credit.) Although I am certain that you will get the hang of this blog thing soon, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

TOPIC ONE: What do you expect and desire to learn from this class? Considering that it might be your last semester here at Shaw (and perhaps the transition to grad school or new careers), what is critical for you to experience in this senior seminar? The original posts are due by Saturday January 23th, with follow up posts expected by class time on Monday January 25nd.

  1. What I expect to obtain while taking this course is nothing short of what I would expect from any other college or university. Dr. Greenfield did an excellent job introducing the courses to the students on the first day. The bar has been set, and as a student, I plan to exceed what is expected of me, and outperform my peers in every aspect of seminar. I am excited, sagacious, and blessed cuz I jus got me refund check …glah

  2. What I expect to obtain from this seminar class is how to write a great research paper and what career fields or available to me upon graduation. The same respect that I give to Professor Greenfield is the same respect that I expect from him. I will come to all assign classes with a positive attitude that I will gain some knowledge that I previous was not aware of. I will do my best to stride for excellence in this class with the help of my classmates. I will keep an open mind and value other classmates opinions as well as my own. Even though I have applied to several grad schools it is still unclear what I will do once I graduated. I will let GOD lead my life for he is the one that I get my strength from.

  3. Mangle I enjoy having you in class because you bring a prospect from a younger point of view and sometimes your comments make me think about the a problem from another perspective. Do not spend your refund check in one day. (smile)

  4. I expect to acquire a more comprehensive understanding about the relationship between people, institutions, and historical changes. I would like to gain more insight on important works in sociology. It is also imperative that I work diligently to improve my critical analytical skills as my sociological imagination comes to life. I am well aware that this is only the tip of the iceberg, as I have had the pleasure and the privilege of being a student in a previous class taught by Dr. Greenfield. I quickly discovered that no one leaves Dr. Greenfield's class without being exposed to a vast amount of knowledge following each session.

  5. My expectations are for myself. I plan to pull out everything Inside of me that I know I am capable of. I know that I can be a little quiet and reserved, which is part of my personality but I am beginning to branch out some. So in this class I plan on being attentive and hard working so that I can achieve everything that Dr.Greenfield throws our way. I also want to have a set plan on the next stage of my life, post graduation.

  6. I to would like to adhere to some of the things BGreen stated. I think that as Seniors(sociology majors) We should already be at that graduate level study. But I know that Dr.Greenfield will work diligently to get us to that level.

  8. I expect to learn how to perfect my writing abilities, and expand my career search. I was stuck on one profession and it was explained to me by the wise one that i could do two things at one time. I believe Dr.G is really going to focus on our writing skills, and i am going to eat every kernnal of knowledge he dishes out. I am attempting to tie everything we have learned thus far together to make one hell of a final research paper.

  9. I also have to separate the classes, i am mixing up what i learn from one class to another, although everything ties into one subject Sociology. Ben you are correct Mangle has a different way of seeing thingsthat we might want to take into consideration depending on the field of work we plan on going into. Glo speak up, it makes for a more interesting class, and you may share some insight on things someone else may overlook.
Did anyone besides me think this class was about something else not related to "research" and writing?

  10. What I desire to learn from Sociology seminar is more about it's history and Marx,Weber, and Durkheim. I expect that each class the whole class will help each other learn. I look at this class as a review over what we have learned in our previous Sociology classes. It is critical for me to learn how to research stuff. My goals are for the class, myself and Dr.G. In my opinion we should all learn from this course.

  11. I would love to learn how to write the best research paper that I can possibly write. My short-term goal is to attend grad school and get a job in my field. I love learning about sociology so everything that we will learn in this class will be greatly appreciated. Just from the first class last week, I was very excited. I learned alot in one night about sociology and grad school.

  12. To crystal...I also thought that this class was going to be about something else. But I know that this class will be interesting and I will take something away from it.

  13. What I expect to obtain from this seminar class is the ability to push myself harder then ever. When I have work I will give it my all and do my best.I know this class will not be easy but I know what I have to do in order to obtain the necessary knowledge that will help me in my future.I definitely know that I have to step it up when it comes to writing papers. Im glad that Dr. Greenfield added "A Guide to Writing Sociology Papers" to our booklist.I think that will help the whole class out tremendously.I'm just eager to dive into the material thats ahead of me because I know there is so much I forgot and so much I need to learn.

  14. Crystal and Shawna, I'm with you ladies 100%. I, too, am pressed to produce a written document that I can, with all my heart, be proud of. My long term goal is to publish an article. Imagine seeing your name in a sociology textbook as the author/researcher. Wow!

  15. Ok, now that my PC has made a connection, I agree w/prior statements about this course. I thought that this class would be a meeting of exchanging ideas on Sociology. But, by checking further I found that "a seminar is an advance college course in which one engages in research or intense study under the guidance of the professor to meet and review/discuss their findings". So my question now is why do we have to take a "Research" class??

  16. ... to learn the skills to be used in conducting your own research in this class! : )
